GMO Foods: What Can I Do?
Everyone that I had read this GMO section reacted
the same, from hopelessness to anger with a little panic tossed in.
I had the same reaction. It makes me mad that we are ten years down
the road and this has been a real kept secret. Ok, yes I have heard
some things about it but I had no idea it was this widespread or had
as much potential for a catastrophe. So what do we do now?
There are a lot of people pretty upset about this.
Another example of big business shoving or sneaking "toxins" into
our environment and the FDA/USDA being on the wrong side of the
discussion. More people need to be upset about GMO foods. More
people need to be informed about how widespread GMO food is in our
supply. This is going to have to be a grass roots effort. The people
at the top are not going to buck these large companies until it
becomes politically correct to do so. Right now it isn't. Did you
know much about GMO foods before you came to this page? Your friends
and neighbors don't know either. Let them in on this secret.
I am a supporter of progress. I didn't put this
information up there to stop it. However, when I see something like
GMO and realize this is way too premature to be run wild in the
environment, I want this process to slow or stop. I want us to keep it in
the labs until we know more about what it means or the damage it
could do. Companies like Monsanto are not concerned about what
happens to me and you, they have an obligation to their stockholders
ONLY. They have proven it time and time again.
So what can you do:
| Tell everyone you know. Bring them to
this web page. Get them informed. Tell them not to panic, we can
slow this process down. But we HAVE TO ACT RIGHT NOW! Discuss it
with them and anyone else that will listen. Ignoring this will
not stop this. It will encourage it to continue. Lack of
decision is a decision. Lack of action is an action. |
| Stop eating GMO foods. Do not feed
this to your children. Learn who is putting GMO foods into their
products. STOP BUYING GMO FOODS. Vote with your
pocketbook. I guarantee you if a large number of people
stopped buying these products, those companies would stop
selling GMO foods!!! Buy non-GMO organic foods. We should be
doing that anyway. It is better for everyone but the big
companies if we bought our food locally. The change in the
climate could put a stop to the fruit and vegetable farms in
California. You will have to do it eventually anyway. BUY
LOCALLY. SUPPORT local fruit and vegetable farmers. Tell your
grocer you want to buy NON-GMO foods. Complain. Get your
neighbors to do the same. |
| Write you Congressman. Even if some of
them
are in the pocket of these GMO companies they do like to get
re-elected. Help large numbers of people write their
Congressman. Make phone calls. Tell them what you think. They
must hear that. Elect Congressman locally, state level and
nationally that support slowing the GMO plague down. Ask them
their opinions. Make them state their stand on GMO foods
publicly. This is an important topic that concerns the future of
your children and grandchildren. |
| Contact the local media. Find someone
that has the guts to put this information in print or on TV. Be
aware that these outlets are mostly controlled by a few large
companies who control what you see and hear, so you need to find
someone that is not afraid. Most of the media people do not know
how serious this issue is. Educate them! |
| Teach your children about GMO foods.
Tell them to discuss it with their school mates so they take it
home. Children should not be eating GMO foods. We don't know
what it will do to them long term. No one is watching to see. No
one knows. |
| Support organizations fighting the big
fight. There are links below to some of these. They are
fighting your fight. They are fighting our fight. Let them know
you support them. Contribute what you can to their fight. |
| Phone call-in talk shows. Bring the
topic up. Be informed and prepared when you call. Know your
points or questions. Write them out before you make the call.
Force the topic to be discussed where ever you can. |
| Go to your children's school(s) and demand
NON-GMO food be served. Most of these people don't even know
they are serving it. Talk to other parents and inform them as to
the GMO concerns. Organize efforts to get this message through
to the school. Don't take 'No' as answer. This is about your
children's health and future. Bring it up at Parent Teacher
meetings.
|
| Download some of the articles on the other
pages. I have made PDF's of them so that you can do that.
Print them off and hand them out. Email them to your friends and
family. Send to the media. Get the word out. Let's reveal this
secret. That is why this web page is here. Here are some of my
favorites:
|
What we should demand:
| GMO foods must be labeled as such.
This is the least we can demand. This will go a long way to
making people aware of how widespread this is. If people knew what foods are GMO because
the label said it this issue would quickly come to a head. Why was the proposal to require
GMO foods to be labeled as such stopped? NON-GMO foods are being
labeled by the manufacturer. Read the labels. If it doesn't say
NON-GMO it is very likely a GMO product. |
| GMO foods must be slowed down or stopped
until more is known about the long term implications. This could
be
a path of a worse case scenario. No
one knows. Let's be sure. We don't need to find out when it is
too late. The scientists admit they don't have enough information at this point to be
doing genetic manipulation and know what the overall
implications are. Our race doesn't have the maturity, the
knowledge
or track record to be playing GOD. This is not an issue about
profits, it is an issue about your children and grandchildren.
It could be an issue about life on
earth as we know it. (1) |
A Monsanto official told the New York Times,
October 25, 1998, that the corporation should not have to take
responsibility for the safety of its food products.
"Monsanto should not have to vouchsafe the safety of biotech food,"
said Phil Angell, Monsanto's director of corporate communications.
"Our interest is in selling as much of it as possible. Assuring its
safety is the FDA's job."
What does the FDA think about this?
“Ultimately, it is
the food producer who is responsible for assuring safety.”
— FDA, “Statement of
Policy: Foods Derived from New Plant Varieties”
(GMO Policy), Federal Register, Vol. 57, No. 104 (1992), p.
22991
